THE DAGGERS BY MOONLIGHT: a glimpse into the real and the fictional in the Northeastern Backlands
Racine Santos, Regionalism, Brazilian Northeast, Epic
This work consists of an analysis of the dramaturgical text À Luz da Lua, Os Punhais (1992), written by the playwright from Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, Racine Santos, establishing a theoretical reflection on the traits and characteristics of his writing in relation to regionalist discourse and the dramatic, lyrical, and epic genres. To this end, the concepts that underpin the construction of a Northeastern imaginary in Brazilian theater are of great interest to this research, as well as the characteristics that point to lyrical and epic elements within a dramatic work. This study proposes a brief biographical understanding of Racine Santos’s life, based on interviews, studies on Northeastern theater, presentations of his books, and newspaper articles, alongside an analysis of his work and its main sources of inspiration. His biography and oeuvre are examined in light of the concepts developed in Magela Lima’s book Os Nordestes e o teatro brasileiro (2020), particularly regarding regional discourse in the construction of the idea of the Northeast, as well as the characteristics of a theater with epic traits, identified by Anatol Rosenfeld (1965) in his book O teatro épico and in other studies that revolve around this theme.
