SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates the choreographic creation process grounded in involuntary movements associated with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), understanding these bodily manifestations not merely as pathological responses but as potential expressive resources for contemporary dance. The study aims to reframe spontaneous anxiety-related movements, transforming them into artistic material through somatic and performative practices, thereby expanding the poetic and aesthetic possibilities of the body on stage. The research is theoretically and methodologically grounded in somatic education, particularly Eutony and the Laban/Bartenieff System, articulated through Somatic-Performative Research (SPR), as proposed by Ciane Fernandes, in which the body is conceived simultaneously as author, object, and means of investigation. The methodological approach involved practical workshops with participants experiencing anxiety, conducted under ethical supervision and supported by professionals in the field of psychology to ensure safety and care throughout the experimental processes. These embodied experiences enabled participants to observe, listen to, and consciously elaborate somatic responses related to anxiety, converting them into movement scores for choreographic composition. The theoretical framework also dialogues with Crip Theory, especially through the contributions of Robert McRuer and Christine Greiner, challenging normative bodily standards and recognizing non-normative bodies as creative and aesthetic forces. As a contribution, this research proposes new perspectives on the relationship between anxiety, body, and art, demonstrating that emotional states traditionally perceived as pathological can be reconfigured as creative devices in dance, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue between dance, mental health, and body studies.
