UM JARDIM CHAMADO GETSÊMANI: NEWTON NAVARRO'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE MODERNIZATION PROCESS OF THE THEATER IN NATAL (1948-1964)

Based on the study of Brazilian modern theater, this dissertation analyzes the show Um Jardim Chamado Getsêmani, questioning how the work was central to the modernization of theater in Natal. Written by Newton Navarro (1928-1992), the play premiered at Teatro Alberto Maranhão in 1964, staged by Wilson Maux (1937-2011). Later, it was evaluated as a landmark of modernity in Natal theater by authors such as Sônia Othon and Racine Santos. A dramaturgical analysis of the play is proposed, as well as a discussion about its staging, carried out here based on the criticisms published in periodicals during the period, as well as the testimonies of some of its participants. In order to place Newton Navarro in the context of the theatrical transformations of the period, the research resorts to the concept of field (BOURDIEU, 1996), to retrace Navarro's artistic training and understand his relationship with modern Pernambuco theater, as well as his trajectory in theater native in the groups Os Farsantes (1949-1950) and Teatro Experimental de Arte (1951). The sources consulted are the collection of Diário de Pernambuco, Diário de Natal and O Poti between the years 1948 and 1964. Thus, this dissertation aims to contribute to the historiography of Natal theater, presenting a Navarro until then superficially commented on in the academy: the theater artist.
