SUMMARY:
This thesis traverses seven artistic-pedagogical projects carried out over fifteen years (2009-
2023) of teaching in the Arts subject, involving adolescents in basic education. These teach
ing, research, and extension actions took place in two public institutions in Rio Grande do
Norte: the Escola Municipal Professor Veríssimo de Melo, in Natal-RN, and the Federal Insti
tute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN). The study ad
dresses the research question: what poetic movements of Art teaching cross artistic-peda
gogical praxis when working with school youth? The research corpus consists of the seven
projects and the group VozCorpo da Escola (VoCE), created within the scope of this investi
gation and composed of former students, whose voices, memories, and trajectories permeate
the writing of the thesis. Triggered by memories, these cantorias (chantings) of Art teaching
organize stories originating from conversation circles, games, testimonies, documents, photo
graphic and audiovisual records, and both in-person and virtual meetings. This process com
poses a set of analytical elements that activate artistic experience as a way of writing about
“schooling oneself” (escolar-se) to the school. The research is situated within the qualitative
field and is conducted through phonopoetics, a methodology created for this investigation.
Activated by orality, phonopoetics articulates spaces and times with collective memory, com
posing alternative ways of feeling, organizing, analyzing, and presenting research data.
Through phonopoetics, the research weaves its epistemological and analytical foundations
into procedures that interpret data in consonance with the “ways of doing” of Art. The theo
retical-conceptual score of the thesis is organized into two major artistic-pedagogical cantori
as. The first focuses on students and ways of being in school, addressing themes such as bod
ies-desks-cellphones, the conduction effect, the school community, the verb “to school one
self” (escolar-se), the school spirit, and an addendum to the spirit of schooling oneself, in dia
logue with perspectives on autonomy, experience, collectivity, work, coexistence, and the
school as a space for skholé time that enhances our school spirit. The second cantoria focuses
on Art, emphasizing artistic projects and the pedagogies of theater, sound, music, and orality,
in relation to games, improvisation, listening, voice, and aesthetic experience in daily school
life. From the intersection between the research corpus and the theoretical cantorias, we de
vised seven poetic movements for Art teaching, understood as poetic movements of the teach
ing craft that provide power and maintain the school spirit. These movements form the acro
nym VOL(u)TAS: Vínculo (Bond), Oralidade (Orality), Ludicidade (Playfulness), Utopia,
Trabalho (Work), Alteragem (Alterage), and Sensibilidade (Sensitivity). They outline an un
derstanding of Art teaching as a spiral movement that crosses voices, bodies, memories, and
experiences produced in and with the public school, affirming Art as a fundamental power of
the school spirit.
