SUMMARY:

This master’s thesis examined the life histories of transmasculine individuals who entered stricto sensu graduate programs in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, seeking to understand how their academic trajectories challenged gender norms and institutionalized modes of knowledge production in higher education. The study was grounded in post-structuralist, transfeminist, and queer scholarship, engaging particularly with the Foucauldian framework of Discourse Analysis. Drawing on oral history methodology, I conducted interviews with three trans men who pursued master’s or doctoral degrees at public higher education institutions in Rio Grande do Norte, referred to as Klaus, Pedro, and João Carlos. The participants’ memories were understood not as transparent accounts of lived experience, but as historically situated constructions shaped by power relations. I argue that transmasculinities function as heterotopic masculinities, generating displacements within hegemonic standards of male recognition in academia and exposing the limits of cisnormative university structures. By mobilizing failure as an analytical category, I critically examined meritocratic and productivist ideals that regulate graduate education, highlighting the participants’ own strategies as forms of resistance that enabled alternative ways of existing and conducting research within the university. Transmasculine presence in graduate education is therefore understood as a reconfiguration of knowledge production itself, expanding institutional frameworks of recognition and contributing to the legitimation of transmasculinities in Rio Grande do Norte, a process of which this thesis also serves as a historical record.
