BRAZILIAN BACHIANS OF VILLA LOBOS: NARRATIVES OF AN IMAGINATED SERTAN
Brazilian Bachianas; Musical Narratives; Northeast Sertão.
The research seeks to understand the vision of the Northeastern “Sertão” given by the composer Heitor Villa Lobos, in the Bachianas Brasileiras composed from 1930 to 1945. For this, his musical narratives will be analyzed, as in the descriptions found in Os Sertões, by Euclides da Cunha and Grandes Sertões Veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa. This analysis will consider the historical aspects and influence of Brazilian social thought, based on an approach to culture, tradition (Hobsbawm: 2015), locality of culture (Bhabha: 1998) and civilizing process (Elias: 2011). The central question is, if the vision presented by Villa Lobos contributed to reproduce the Northeastern myth, specifically the northeastern “Sertão” (Albuquerque: 2011), or if between their lines, it is possible to observe gaps for new conceptions of the musical culture of that region in later musical works, which also addressed the theme. The research will be qualitative of bibliographic character, in which it predicts literature review and content analysis (Bardin: 2011), exposed in a self-explanatory framework of symbolic cartography (Santos: 2000). The thesis aims to contribute to the reflection on possible connections and ruptures on Brazilian music in the area of Social Sciences.
