SUMMARY:

We seek to experience the sidewalks of the city of Natal (RN) beyond their strictly material dimension and their function as urban mobility infrastructure. The study problematizes these locations as living spaces of permanence, encounter, tension, and survival, conceiving them as a mosaic where the prosaic and the poetic, the material and the immaterial intertwine. For this thesis, why return to a piece of the city that seems to be in disuse, considering the remodeling process of urban spaces, which increasingly adapt to diminish the motricity of the feet and accentuate the mechanics of wheels and rails? Bridges, tunnels, viaducts, and one-way streets accelerate the passage of beings and objects in their daily displacements, creating landscapes nuanced by the continuity of movement, while sidewalks appear as discontinuous obstacles to this celerity that has taken over city living. Thus, the central question that arises is: how do polychromatic sidewalks manifest discontinuities within the fabric of Natal's cityscape? The central objective consists of analyzing the emerging landscapes in these spaces, seeking to understand the multiplicity of experiences and affectations through the concept of "polychromatic sidewalks." The theoretical-methodological framework relies on the thought of Gaston Bachelard (2008) to activate images and imagination, guiding the geographical reasoning; on the practice of walking to mobilize the strategy of the investigative immersion method; and on the homo-poíesis to trigger the "Lyrical Landscape" as a device for the creation and signification of the spatial narrative, considering the empirical scope identified as follows: bus stops, street markets, schools, dunes, and public lighting. Additionally, the presentation of the "Yellow Notebook" acts as a preliminary experiment of the research, systematized in light of the homo-poíesis and their trajectories through the urban space. This material consolidates itself as a poetic diary permeated by a sensitive cartography. Finally, it is concluded that sidewalks go far beyond the mere function of pedestrian transit, revealing themselves as vital sources of constant urban reinvention and a primordial reflection of the spatial poetics in the city of Natal.
