SUMMARY:

Human occupation in the Brazilian semiarid region is concentrated near rivers, where the availability of water favors the settlement of populations. However, it has been identified that the economic activities developed in this area occupy floodplains and the banks of water bodies, which, despite favoring the use of fertile alluvial soils, often disregard the Permanent Preservation Areas established by federal legislation. As a consequence, the deforestation of riparian forests has been a recurring practice to enable the expansion of these activities. In addition to these transformations, continuous human interventions, including dams, as well as other hydrological modifications, have altered the natural hydrodynamics, thus modifying the structure and function of the landscape. Given this scenario, this study has the general objective of evaluating the effects of changes in flood flows on the dynamics of land use and cover in the river plain of the lower course of the Piranhas-Açu River, considering the period from 1984 to 2024. The methodology that supports this study is based on the geosystemic approach, including steps, among them: a) classification of the landscape unit (geotopes), for which satellite images will be used through the GeoBIA Technique (object-oriented classification), with CBERS 4A images; b) characterization of floods, for which the time frame from 1984 to 2024 will be considered, from data obtained from platforms such as the National Water Agency (ANA), the Agricultural Research Corporation of Rio Grande do Norte (EMPARN) and the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET); c) characterization of land use and cover, based on the Annual Mapping Project of Land Cover and Use in Brazil (MapBiomas). To this end, soil samples will be collected at ten stations located on the banks of the Lower Course of the Piranhas-Açu River, selected based on water proximity data, according to guidelines established by EMBRAPA. The Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) V.5 will be adopted to identify the ecosystem services provided by the river environment of the Lower Course of the Piranhas-Açu River. In addition, a field form will be used to record the use of straw, stems and carnauba fences. The QGIS Biatowieza 3.22 software will be used to produce the maps, and the maps will be developed from shapefiles provided by government agencies. After the aforementioned steps, the field reconnaissance work will serve as a basis for validating the images produced, integrating the mapping of the Lower Course of the Piranhas-Açu River. To prove the data obtained, photographic records will be used, which will be presented and discussed throughout the text. This research is expected to demonstrate that the dam led to the accumulation of sediments upstream and influenced changes in land use, and the modified hydrodynamics allowed the emergence of new classes of land occupation.
