Prior to the 1990, coconut production in Rio Grande do Norte was carried out through the use of manual tools and family labor carried out in small, consolidated areas in the interior of the state and on the coastal coast, dependent exclusively on natural conditions. Such production was intended to form part of the family diet, as an ingredient in the preparation of some foods, such as cakes, jelly, cocada, sweets, tapioca, couscous, fish, in the extraction of oil to strengthen hair, among others. other compositions. In some cases, the surplus of this production was sold at open-air markets in the region. With the advent of the agricultural modernization process, the technicalization of the countryside, the expansion of electrification to rural areas, the adoption of irrigation systems in rural areas, with the consolidation of “Sun and Sea” tourism, this activity ceases to be exclusively meeting the needs of family groups and starting to satisfy the capitalist logic to meet market demand, resulting in a break in the paradigm and logic of production, integrating coconut production into the globalized market and, consequently, made it possible to consolidate the spatial circuit of coconut production in Rio Grande do Norte. This study aims to understand the connections between the spatial circuit of irrigated coconut production in the state of Rio Grande do Norte and the globalized market, identifying its links with trade flows at the national and international levels based on the material flows that occur from productive consumption and consumptive consumption at the regional, national and international levels. This work is configured as a basic research, in which we will use some methodological procedures such as: search bibliographic and documentary research linked to the theme addressed and the theoretical assumptions of this research; effective collection and systematization of primary and secondary data which will be expressed through maps, tables, graphs and charts; conducting interviews with irrigated coconut producers, middlemen, representatives of commercial establishments (retailers and wholesalers), agro-industries that process coconut water, unions and associations of coconut producers, representatives of the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company of Rio Grande do Norte (Emater/RN), the Water Management Institute of the state of Rio Grande do Norte (Igarn), the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (Sepe/RN), the Secretariat of the Environment and Water Resources (Semarh/RN). These methodological procedures will be implemented through field research, in which, in addition to interviews, semi-structured multiple-choice questionnaires will be applied, as well as objective questions directed at the main stakeholders, taking into account the sample size calculation, which allows us to deliberate on the minimum number of subjects to interview so that the information collected can be reliable and valid. According to our investigations inherent to this ongoing research, some data indicate that the links between the spatial circuit of coconut production in the state of Rio Grande do Norte and the process of globalization occur through commercial exchanges that take place both in the territory of Rio Grande do Norte and within the Brazilian territory based on circles of cooperation, productive consumption and consumptive consumption, which take place in the context of the globalized market.
