SUMMARY:

Acid stimulation is a widely employed technique to enhance the productivity of carbonate reservoirs, particularly those with a significant dolomite content, which represent a substantial portion of global hydrocarbon reserves. In this study, the behavior of the pore volume curve up to breakthrough (PV bt) was investigated in samples from the Bonneterre Dolomite (BT) formation, subjected to acidification with 15 wt% HCl solution containing commercial additives, corrosion inhibitor (0.5% v/v), and emulsion preventer (0.2% v/v). Eleven core flooding experiments were conducted at 60 °C, with a confining pressure of 2000 psi, backpressure of 1200 psi, and axial pressure of 500 psi. Injection flow rates ranged from 0.4 to 4.0 mL/min. The samples exhibited porosities between 13.99% and 14.99% and permeabilities from 0.28 to 4.21 mD. The PV bt curve indicated typical non-linear dissolution behavior, with a minimum value of 2.03 observed at 2 mL/min, associated with the optimal development of wormholes. Micro-computed tomography images revealed three distinct dissolution patterns: predominant dissolution at the inlet face at low flow rates, well-developed conical channels under ideal conditions, and branched structures at high flow rates. The study demonstrates the influence of dolomite kinetics and rock heterogeneity on the efficiency of acid treatment and reinforces the importance of selecting appropriate injection flow rates in systems containing additives. This study offers new insights into the Bonneterre formation and highlights the need for careful selection of operational parameters for acid treatment of dolomitic reservoirs.
