SUMMARY:

Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs) are essential for the conservation of
semi-arid tropical ecosystems, contributing to the maintenance of riparian soil quality and
surface water. This study evaluated the effects of different land uses on riparian soil quality
and its influence on diffuse pollution in a reservoir located in the semi-arid tropics of Brazil.
The hypothesis is that anthropogenic activities intensify soil degradation, increasing the input
of nutrients and solids into water bodies. Soils under native vegetation, livestock, agriculture,
and exposed soil were analyzed, selected through land-use mapping within a 100-meter
buffer around the reservoir. Physical and chemical soil attributes, such as sand, silt, clay, soil
density, pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and available phosphorus, were evaluated,
alongside limnological water variables, including temperature, transparency, pH, turbidity,
electrical conductivity, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, organic carbon, total solids, organic
solids, inorganic solids, and chlorophyll-a. The ecosystem’s trophic state was also assessed.
Statistical analysis included boxplots, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Principal Component Analysis
(PCA). Results indicated no statistically significant differences at a 5% significance level
among land uses in the PPA for the analyzed variables. However, PCA revealed a greater
contribution of solids and nutrients in agricultural and livestock areas, while native vegetation
and exposed soil showed functional similarity. The reservoir’s trophic state was classified as
eutrophic. These findings highlight an advanced state of environmental degradation in the
reservoir’s PPA, a consequence of the intensive exploitation of the native Caatinga
vegetation, compromising the PPAs' role as ecological barriers against anthropogenic
impacts. The study emphasizes the importance of conserving and restoring PPAs as a critical
strategy for mitigating diffuse pollution and protecting water resources, ensuring water
security not only in semi-arid regions but also in similar areas worldwide.
