In recent years, the demand for intervention services for the conservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings has increased significantly. This is necessary because the preservation of historical heritage represents an important action to safeguard the culture of a people, their identity and their memories, as a living document. These interventions are often carried out by changing materials and construction processes that have not always contributed to improving the state of conservation of historic buildings. So, in order to make a more effective contribution to the restoration of historic buildings, the aim of this study was to develop a research project using lime mortars, a new material that could provide a

again in resistance at the first ages and increase the useful life of the masonry cladding, in order to guarantee the compatibility of the restoration mortar with the pre-existing mortar in the historic building. To this end, 4 (four) types of lime and sand mortar were selected (1:2, 1:4, 1:6 and 1:8), which are the most commonly found in historic buildings in Brazil. And then, diatomite was added, replacing the hydrated lime in percentages of 10% and 20% in each of them. The physical-mechanical characterization of historical mortar specimens aged 28 and 90 days was carried out. The results of the tests carried out showed an increase in the mechanical performance of the mortars with the incorporation of diatomite, reaching a 16.6% increase in the tensile strength in flexion in the mixture richest in binder (1:2). And in axial compression, the mixes with 20% incorporation reached an average increase of 3 times more in relation to the resistance values of the reference mixes.
