SUMMARY:

The Costa Branca Potiguar boasts a variety of unique landscapes that highlight its significant potential for the development and expansion of tourism. Despite this, demand in the region is still in its infancy, with sun and beach tourism predominating. However, given the remarkable heritage associated with the geodiversity of this territory, geotourism emerges as a relevant and promising alternative. Although still not widely practised within the tourism sector but a vibrant field of scientific research, geotourism offers, beyond landscape appreciation and leisure, the promotion of knowledge and interpretation of the physical and natural features that characterise tourist destinations. In this context, geotourism itineraries and maps can serve as useful tools for this purpose, as they incorporate points of interest relating to geoheritage and provide interpretative descriptions, thereby simultaneously fulfilling tourist, educational and geoscientific objectives. In view of this, the main objective of this study is to propose a geotourism itinerary for the municipalities of Areia Branca (RN), Porto do Mangue (RN) and Grossos (RN), based on the geosites inventoried by Terto (2021) and Silva (2022), which were assessed primarily for their scientific and aesthetic value. These sites are regarded as areas of interest capable of providing a favourable setting for the development of geotourism. Thus, to achieve the proposed objectives, a methodology was adopted comprising the following stages: (I) selection of points of interest; (II) a literature and cartographic review of the spatial area under consideration; (III) conducting field research to collect supplementary data; and (IV) the development of the itinerary, geotourism maps and a model interpretative panel for future replication at the other geosites. Finally, a SWOT analysis of the itinerary was carried out to assess the potential and challenges associated with the proposal.
