The semiarid hinterland as a geographical category in the works of Manuel Correia de Andrade
Manuel Correia de Andrade; Sertão; Northeast; Brazilian social thought.
Manuel Correia de Andrade stands as one of the most important scholars in the human sciences
in twentieth-century Brazil, particularly in the field of Geography. His studies, marked by
interdisciplinarity and a significant focus on agrarian and regional issues, enabled the development
of a vast body of work on the Brazilian context, especially concerning the Northeast and its
contrasts. Considering his formative background, Andrade conducted important studies on the
formative aspects of the Northeastern subregions — Zona da Mata, Agreste, Sertão, and Meio
Norte — particularly the sertanejo space, attributing to it his own characteristics and interpretations
regarding the Northeastern hinterland. Thus, this research centers on how Manuel Correia de
Andrade constructs and analyzes the geographical category of the sertão, contributing to the
theoretical convergence between “sertão” and “Semi-arid” in the process of “Northeasternization”
of the sertanejo category and its incorporation into Northeastern regionalism. Furthermore, drawing
on a category widely debated within Brazilian social thought, this study questions Manuel Correia
de Andrade’s participation in the debates on the sertão within the scope of Northeastern
regionalism, considering the physical and social characteristics mobilized by the author to construct
a particular space in his extensive scientific production. To this end, qualitative analyses of the
author’s works and personal archives are required, including letters from his intellectual network,
book marginalia, documents, interviews, and other materials that provide a basis for delineating a
trajectory of thought and the construction of the sertão in Andrade’s work. The author’s personal
documents are examined through the collections available at the Hemeroteca Digital and at the
Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB/USP), which holds an extensive body of materials on Manuel
Correia, enabling a study that goes beyond his published works and advances into archival
research and personal collections.
