SUMMARY:

This thesis project investigates the practice of the vaqueiro de gibão in the Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, through a long-term visual ethnography developed over more than a decade, in which photography and anthropology are articulated as both method and relational field. The thesis is grounded in the premise that territorial continuity is not a static tradition, but rather a situated and relational production emerging from the interaction between body, technique, animal, and environment, approaching the notion of duration as qualitative flow. From this perspective, time does not precede practice; instead, it is produced within the very experience of everyday labor.
The central focus of the research is the notion of ente — a relational ontological category in which the photographic image ceases to function merely as representation and instead operates as an active presence that articulates memory, social circulation, and cultural recognition. The ente is neither the cowboy, nor the photograph, nor the memory activated by it; rather, it is the relational configuration produced when these elements converge and the image begins to inhabit social relations.
The structure of the thesis is organized around four complementary axes: the relational production of continuity within the territory ; image mediation and the constitutive role of photography in the ethnographic field ; the circulation of images and their redistribution across different scales of recognition, including the emergence of the “guardians of images” as a relational category; and the conditions of heritage-making surrounding the vaqueiro de gibão practice, examining how images participate in the inscription of this practice within institutional regimes of cultural recognition.
The research contributes to contemporary debates in the anthropology of time, anthropology of images, and relational ontologies, mobilizing a Latin American perspective — particularly through the notions of ch’ixi (Rivera Cusicanqui) and biointeraction (Bispo dos Santos) — to question modern distinctions between image and representation, subject and presence, territory and circulatio
