SUMMARY:
Backpacking trips have become a worldwide phenomenon, which was established in the post-war period, assembling other meanings over the past decades. Nowadays they have become more common in different social segments through backpacking, but also through other forms of backpacking trips emerging around the world. Women have been increasingly inserted into this phenomenon, replacing and producing other meanings in a practice built in a masculine way. Establishing a feminist and decolonial dialogue between anthropology and trips, the objective of this work is to explore the experiences of women who backpacked along South American routes. I conducted a multi-site ethnographic field research in 2019, which I called “ethnographic backpacking”, with an itinerary built across Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. It lasted for three months and in most of the routes I was alone. I embarked on the idea of “following” the traveling women, so I had five ethnographic meetings that took place along the way. The movements between the borders, the itineraries of the travelers and the connections that were formed, made it possible to perceive the cultural flows and displacements provided by the experiences of backpacking trips. Thus, I open the backpack with the stories of agencies that culminated in the adoption of a lifestyle based on traveling alone, in the ways of working, in the strategies of displacement, in the different ways of occupying spaces and in other meanings that the life of backpacking can produce for women
