Play of the beast, Dreams, Symbolic, Brazilian social imaginary, Popular wisdom.
The game of the beast is a kind of lottery that emerged in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 1892. Although for most of its history - and currently - being illegal, it is one of the most popular games of chance in the country, is present in the midst of society and inserted from the busiest capitals to small cities, penetrating in such a way as to become adaptable to the most varied lifestyles and social contexts. In the midst of this are the people who work, or are involved, in this world of numbers, animals and humans: bankers, money changers, collectors and, more generally, amateur players, all present in this universe driven by the desire to make money. Thus, the present work presents an ethnographic study on the game of the animal developed in the city of Mossoró-RN, in order to understand the importance of this activity in the lives of the people involved, as well as for the city's own from the perspective of symbolic dimension of social life pointed out by Clifford Geertz (1989, 1997) and Lévi-Strauss (1975). In addition to participant observation, interviews were conducted with each group of people related to the game. The fieldwork made it possible to observe that in the quest to achieve the success of the game, players have a myriad of interpretations and deciphers based on dreams, as well as techniques, superstitions in the acasos of life and with a rich symbolic imagery, making these people true scholars of popular knowledge through game of critter. The theoretical basis on the subject was based on the studies of Soares (1993) and DaMatta & Soárez (1999). The ethnographic research was especially concentrated in the Santo Antônio neighborhood and in three adjacent ones, being Barrocas, Bom Jardim and Paredões respectively. In general, the study aims to contribute in presenting the complex and circumstantial specificity of the game of the animal based on the data and testimonies collected.
