Quadrilha; Competition; junino movement; quadrilha’s policy; performance
This work is a result of an experience lived in the context of the competitive “quadrilhas juninas” in Ceará, more specifically at Sobral, state’s north. The proposal is to reflect, from the experience in a delimited field, on the characteristics of the called “movimento junino” or “quadrilheiro” composed mainly by the quadrilhas that participate in the so-called festivals, contests where they fight for awards that are, at the same time, material and symbolic. Following the movement waged by a specific junino group within this context, this work seeks to uncover the social structure that is formed by the processes lived by the so-called quadrilheiros, social actors that directly integrate the symbolic universe of the junino competitions in the state - which has practices, interests and an specifically policy, made from a knowledge that is built on the relationships and interactions established in such context. The construction of a continuous social process can be seen from this, which accounts for a transformation in the cultural manifestation in question, that incorporates to its festive symbols regarded as typical new elements and motivations, among which the question of rivalry and competitivity seem to be latent. The present study helps thinking about the movements lived by certain groups of the so-called popular culture in the contemporaneity, indicating that their transformations are not only on the aesthetic level of the art they express publicly but above all in the social processes assumed in the construction of the cultural manifestations, in which sensitive changes of perspective also happen.
