SUMMARY:

With the demographic transition experienced around the world, the aging population is
increasingly suffering from chronic degenerative diseases, requiring comprehensive care to
manage the numerous health needs that affect this population. However, this approach needs
to take into account that this care, in most cases, is not aimed at curing these illnesses, but at
relieving suffering and preserving the autonomy of this individual in their final phase of life.
In this context, palliative care emerges: a philosophy of care and a multi-professional
approach aimed at people who have a serious, progressive illness and their families, in order
to deal with the problems caused through the prevention and relief of suffering. The
fundamentals that guide palliative care can be used as an ethical imperative to optimize
resources. Some hospitals use this type of care in their services. However, this model suffers
negative interference, as it tends to maintain the curative model in evidence. The aim of this
research is to develop strategies for improving nursing care in palliative care in hospitals. To
this end, an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative case study was carried out in three stages: 1) a
scoping review, in order to map and synthesize the role of nurses in palliative care in the
hospital environment; 2) a focus group with 09 nurses working in various inpatient sectors of
a university hospital in northeastern Brazil, to identify the knowledge and practices currently
used with patients requiring palliative care and 3) the elaboration of an open educational
resource, of the podcast program type, to raise awareness and disseminate knowledge about
palliative care. The results presented in this dissertation qualification document are grouped
based on a protocol and scope review according to the JBI model. The second part presents
preliminary results from the focus group using Bardin's content analysis technique. It is hoped
that, based on the findings of the previous stages, an instructional teaching material on
palliative care for nurses will be built for the EBSERH network, in the form of a podcast
program, with the themes discussed in the focus group and in the scoping review, in order to
disseminate content in the EBSERH network with the aim of informing and raising awareness
of the need to adapt to the national palliative care policy in the context of the SUS.
