Blockchain Applied to the Technological Ecosystem of the revELA Platform: applied in the context of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that, despite being rare, has shown an increase in prevalence in recent years. Due to its heterogeneity, monitoring disease progression is complex and ideally requires a multidisciplinary approach, which is essential to provide adequate care and improve patients' quality of life. In parallel with the care provided by the multidisciplinary team, technological tools such as electronic records and patient records emerge, which assist in studies and monitoring of the progression of this disease for each individual. In Brazil, we have the National ALS Registry, which consists of a digital health solution that aims to collect epidemiological data from the various ALS patients in Brazil. When using technological solutions like this, concerns arise regarding security, data integrity and the importance of an interoperable platform for sharing with other systems. To address such concerns, blockchain technology has been attracting a lot of attention in several areas that already see the possibilities for progress with its incorporation. In view of the lack of interoperability and to make the National Registry increasingly robust, this work presents a proposal for the incorporation of a blockchain network as a strong alternative to improve the management of medical data and treatments for patients with ALS.
