SUMMARY:

The non-destructive characterization of materials is a growing demand across various fields of knowledge. In this context, planar sensors operating in the microwave range stand out as a promising technology, as they exploit the dielectric properties of materials as parameters for identification and monitoring. This work presents the analysis and design of new configurations of planar microwave resonators used as sensing devices for characterizing material dielectric properties, with applications in Civil Construction, Food Safety, and Biomedical Evaluation. The research encompasses electromagnetic modeling, geometry optimization aimed at device miniaturization and increased sensitivity, and an analysis of the interaction phenomena between electromagnetic fields and the materials under test. The designed devices were simulated using Ansys HFSS software, fabricated via printed circuit techniques, and experimentally characterized to obtain their frequency responses. The applications investigated include determining thermal properties and void ratios in cementitious mortar matrices, detecting food contamination, and monitoring the dehydration of biological tissues. The results demonstrate that the developed sensors exhibit high sensitivity to variations in the dielectric properties of the analyzed materials, enabling the distinction of different material properties in a non-destructive manner with good experimental repeatability. Thus, it can be concluded that the proposed devices offer versatile alternatives for material characterization with interdisciplinary applications, contributing both to the study of microwave sensors and to expanding the potential use of these devices in the inspection and quality control of civil construction materials, food safety, and biomedical evaluation.
