Davydov’s developmental teaching, based on Vigostski’s cultural-historical theory and Leontiev’s therory of activity, has emerged as a theoretical metodological possibility that can contribute to the development of theoretical thinking in diferent curricular components and teaching levels. The problem of this research is to know if developmental teaching can contribute to the development of theoretial thinking in high school students from the contens os physical education and more e specifically athletics. The Study aims to analyze the results os a didactic experiment in a teaching unit, with the athletics content. It is a didactic-formative experiment, with a qualitative approach, of the descriptive type that acts at the same time as method of invetigations and experimental teaching. The study was developed with a sample of 30 participants, students from a high school class who attend physical education classes at the Instituto Federal de Educação Ciência e Tecnologia do Piauí – IFPI, at Campus Valença do Piauí, aged betwen 14 and 17 years. After completing out the Term of Free and Informed Assent and those responsible for filling out the Term of Free and Informed Consent, they participated in the realization of a didactic experiment having athletics as its content, using the precepts of the theory of the study activity, based on the solution of problems, to fulfill the study tasks, through determined actions, advocated by Davydov (1988) during the 8 classes. Data were collected through the application of a diagnostic questionnaire, notes made in a field diary and transcription of semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed and interpreted with reference to the proposed objectives and theoretical assumptions of developmental teaching. After the application of the experiment, an educational product will be made in the form of a didactic unit the coul be used by other teachers.
