RESUMO:

Different methodologies are investigated for the removal of the pollutants present in the water produced from the oil exploration, in order to reduce the environmental impact. In recent years special attention has been paid to electrochemical technologies. In this work, the indirect electrochemical oxidation was used in two real effluents from the petroleum industry located in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. The experiments were carried out in batch and flow systems with the Ruthenium Oxide electrodes (Ti/ Ru0.3Ti0.7O2), Titanium (Ti/ Pt) and Boron Doped Diamond (BDD) and cathode titanium (Ti), applying different current densities (15 mA cm-2 and 45 mA cm-2). For the analysis of the adequacy of the electrochemical treatment, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) decay was verified through its concentrations at the end of the treatment. According to the results obtained for the batch systems, COD removal was approximately 42% with energy consumption of 115 KWhm-3 and 52% with 86 KWhm-3 consumed using BDD and Ti / Pt respectively, under these conditions the Ti anode /Ru0.3Ti0.7O2 showed the best degradation efficiency with 85% organic matter removal and lower energy consumption 70 KWhm-3, the most efficient behavior of this electrode was correlated with the evolution of the chlorinated oxidative species (ClO-2, ClO2, Cl2) at the anode during treatment. When real effluents were submitted to electrochemical treatment in the flow cell, the best results were obtained with the BDD anode at the lowest applied current density, with near-total mineralization values and energy consumption of 66 KWhm-3. The toxicity of the treated effluents was estimated by the cultivation of Lactuca Sativa to evaluate the possible reuse of the effluent after treatment, which was effective when the germination factor was analyzed for the effluent treated with both anodes under flow conditions with development of the stem more expressive if compared to the reference sample for the anode Ti / Ru0.3Ti0.7O2. In the batch systems the organic load and the production of oxidants at the end of the electrochemical disinfection inhibited the germination of Lactuca sativa, which was attributed to the remaining oxidants in the treated effluent, avoiding the germination due to the attack of the oxidants of the cell walls of lettuce seeds . The results indicate the efficiency of the method for removal of the organic compounds confirming the applicability to the studied effluents.
