SUMMARY:

Introduction: Self-efficacy has been associated with improved health in children and adolescents with chronic respiratory diseases. However, despite the need for robust evaluation methods, there are still no self-efficacy questionnaires validated in Brazil for this population. Objective: To translate, cross-culturally adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Pediatric Rating of Chronic Illness Self-Efficacy (PRCISE) in children and adolescents with chronic respiratory diseases. Methods: This is an exploratory and psychometric methodological study, which encompasses the process of translation, cross-cultural adaptation and assessment of the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the PRCISE. The cross-cultural adaptation protocol was prepared according to internationally established recommendations, involving translation, back-translation, expert committee and pre-test procedures. The psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the PRCISE will be evaluated in a large sample of children and adolescents aged 7 to 20 years, who have some chronic respiratory disease in isolation and who are able to read and complete the questionnaires in Portuguese. Clinical, demographic and socioeconomic information will be collected from the participants and their caregivers, as well as the scores from the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™️ 4.0 and the Perceived General Self-Efficacy Scale. The Brazilian version of the PRCISE will be analyzed for its content validity, construct validity, internal consistency, convergent validity, divergent validity and reliability. Partial results: Two Brazilian translators, fluent in English, carried out the translations of the PRCISE, which were reconciled in a synthesis version by the study researchers. This version was then back-translated by two translators who were native speakers of English and fluent in Brazilian Portuguese. The results obtained by these 3 steps were approved by the original author and then forwarded to the expert committee. The committee was composed of 8 members, 1 pulmonologist, 1 physiotherapist, 2 researchers with experience in cross-cultural adaptation, 1 language professional and 3 representatives of the target population. After the first evaluation round, items with a Kappa coefficient < 0.80 were adjusted to make the instrument more adequate and understandable by the target population. The results of the following rounds are still being determined.
