From the imagery of social media nowadays to the construction of a new 'self-look': A case study in education and visual culture
Imagery, social media, beauty, art education, visual culture.
This study deals with a practice in art education centered around visual culture, where the main goal is to promote the perception of critical thinking about mediatic images today and their impact on the assimilation of adolescents, starting from the historical perception of variation standards of beauty, emphasizing the need for image reading teaching not only of a historical and social nature, but also mainly critical. Such analysis is based on the perception of beauty developed by the philosopher Scruton, on the spectacularization of existence in the view of Sibilia, on the critical observation of the imagery of social networks – Instagram –, with a comparison with the photographs of the artist Sebastião Salgado. Based on a methodology of case study action research and a methodology of teaching Ana Mae Barbosa's Triangular Approach, directing an investigative base based on the effective participation of students, where dialogues and critical analyzes were promoted based on imagery perception (photography), We sought to elucidate the question: Is it possible to teach how to think about beauty based on the values that the individual considers fundamental? This study aims to develop, in those involved, the perception of how they feel in front of the images of the social networks, to verify the possibility of promoting a change in this feeling – when of a negative nature –, to provide a critical perception about these images and to analyze the possible existence of change in their perception.
