SUMMARY:

This thesis, which is still under construction, looks at Brazilian open-air markets as a public space, a social scenario and a field for the production of knowledge in order to think about the psychologies that can be perceived and practiced at fairs, based on some of their daily practices and the "psy" discourses about them. Allied to this, it also problematizes what works when psychology meets the markets, with the intention of inventorying some of the effects of the gears of knowledge-power that have had an impact on the fairs, cities and subjectivities. To achieve this, a combination of Foucauldian archaeology and genealogy was undertaken, based on two movements: (I) a review of the production on open-air markets in the human sciences and psychology, in order to map the discourses that emerge about open-air markets and to follow the urban interventions that have historically been directed at the markets and; (II) the revisiting and updating of experiments at Feira do Alecrim, in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, and at Feira do Produtor Rural, in Boa Vista, Roraima, with an ethnographic stage. Ramifications of the analyses are threefold: (I) the imbrication and interdependence between markets and cities, especially in the practices of Brazilian colonization; (II) the perpetuation of the condition of precariousness, based on concept of Judith Butler and the violations of the lives of those who make and live the Brazilian open-air markets: women, workers, childhoods, xenophobia and racism and; (III) markets as practices of resistance and invention of life, in their sociability, sustainability and confrontation with neoliberalism and indifference to the world. Finally, in what is gathered about Brazilian open-air markets, we highlight their relevance and pertinence in contemporary cities and, adding an institutionalist perspective, the possible ways to mislead the present of psychology.
