SUMMARY:

The rural contexts constitute a new field of investigation for Latin American Psychology. Thus, some challenges have permeated this approach, highlighting the theoretical gaps regarding the rural category. In view of that, the aim was to investigate how the scientific production of Psychology has approached the rural contexts in Latin America. Scientific articles in the form of empirical studies on the theme written by Latin American psychologists were analyzed. The searches were conducted through the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), using the term “Psychology” and the Boolean descriptor and for the terms, “rural zone” and “rural population” in Portuguese, English and Spanish, and in the following databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, Redalyc, Scielo, PEPSI and LILACS. In the end, a total of 89 articles were found. The main results show that the scientific production of Psychology in Latin America about rural contexts is recent and still concentrated within a few countries. Besides, it was verified the predominance of terms and expressions that define rural by the physical-geographic sense. It is highlighted that there are few reflections on the rural category, being Social Psychology the area that produces the most on the subject and reflects on this category. We also highlight the secondary position of Community Social Psychology (CSP) in the discussion about ruralities, with only four articles categorized in this field, despite having been developed in Latin America and contextualized to its reality. Despite some gaps, we observed an effort from Psychology in presenting the specificities of rural contexts, which may open an important space for analysis, discussion and proposition of contextualized practices. We conclude that, for Psychology to effectively contribute in the field of rural contexts, it is urgent to problematize the theoretical aspects about rural, understanding that it is a category of theoretical reflection and not just a place where research is carried out. Psychology needs to position itself clearly and show how and in what ways it can contribute to the understanding and transformation of Latin American rural contexts.
