SUMMARY:

The number of female researchers has grown worldwide. However, gender inequalities persist in four aspects: women still represent a minority share in world science; they focus on certain areas of knowledge; they predominate in the early career levels and are underrepresented in deliberative positions of scientific and technological policy. In Brazilian science, this scenario is repeated. Despite the increase in women among the PQ / CNPq fellows, there is still gender asymmetry in several areas of knowledge, including CHSSALLA and Psychology. As a result, this research focuses on the relationship between science and gender, with a focus on the impacts of the demands for scientific excellence in the daily lives of the PQ Psychology fellows. A multi-method approach established in three stages was adopted: analysis of public domain data; application of an electronic form and remote interviews. From these steps, five studies resulted, whose findings demonstrate that: a) in Psychology, despite the lower gender inequality, women occupy proportionally fewer positions at the top of their careers; b) the profile of the PQ fellow in the area is white, cis, middle-class, married, heterosexual and women from the south-east of the country. This picture reveals the mechanisms that constitute the modern scientific rationality that, crossed by the colonialism of gender, race and class, induce an unequal access on the part of women to the conditions that favor scientific excellence and that of black and indigenous women compared to white women; c) The main problems faced are related to the scenario of dispute and internal competition to the various areas of knowledge that have been intensified within the scope of S&T in the country and to the current configuration of academic work marked by the overload of activities and functions, generating feelings of satisfaction and discouragement; d) The demands of academic-scientific work produce impacts on the researchers daily lives, which, added to domestic, family and conjugal demands, demand the invention of conciliation strategies, which are associated with the expansion of vulnerability to psychological suffering and health problems. It is concluded that the domestic and work routine of the PQ scholarship holders is crossed by structural gender inequality and androcentrism. Women need to deal with institutionalized sexism, discrimination and the hierarchies of knowledge-power that permeate institutional relations. In the family and domestic sphere, the persistence of gender hierarchies is particularly noticeable in marital relationships. The invisibility of these asymmetries reinforces women's adherence to the hegemonic individualizing rationality that disconnects academic-scientific inequalities and the production of suffering from gender impositions.
