“DO NOT DELEGATE”: A RESCUE OF THE LEADING ROLE OF THE WORKING CLASS IN THE FIELD OF WORKERS' HEALTH

SUMMARY:

The capital-labour contradiction impacts negatively on the health of the working class, to the detriment of the interest of the dominant class for the ceaseless accumulation of capital. In light of this, the field of Workers´ Health (WH) emerged in 1970 with the perspective of workers' taking a leading role in health care, strongly marked by the motto "do not delegate". This study is based on the hypothesis that the fragility of workers' involvement makes real and more consistent transformations in this field difficult, leading to high rates of accidents and occupational illnesses. Therefore, we seek to analyze the current obstacles to the effectiveness of the of the working class having a leading role regarding their health. As specific objectives, we propose: (a) to articulate Marxist categories with the OH field; (b) to analyze what it means to talk about the leading role of workers today; (c) to study the case of the ABC metallurgists in this perspective, identifying the transformations that the categories have gone through historically, the formulations of the workers, via unions, on the health agenda; (d) to verify how sick or injured workers of these categories identify these impasses present in the health-work process. To achieve these objectives, we conducted (1) a theoretical study of Marx's contributions, in the categories of work, alienation and estrangement, articulating these concepts with the field of OH. Another stage seeks (2) to study the particular case of the metalworker category of the ABC region, through (a) documental analysis of resolutions of the congresses and union press on the worker's health agenda; (b) interview with workers who seek support from the union in face of a situation of illness/work accident.
