This study intends to investigate the course of the practice of psychologists in the Social Assistance Referral Center (CRAS, in Portuguese), considering more than a decade of insertion in this field, the expressive inclusion of those professionals, the dilemmas facing social demands and the (in)definitions of policies of the Unified Public System of Social Assistance (SUAS, in Portuguese). Hence, the objective of this study was to analyze the path of Psychology’s practice in Basic Social Protection of SUAS. More specifically, we sought to identify the profile and insertion of the psychologists working in CRAS units, as well as characterize their actions and activities developed, and also to find the issues and challenges of these professionals’ work in Social Assistance. In order to reach the proposed objectives, we carried out a mapping of the psychologists linked to the CRAS in the city of Natal, state of Rio Grande do Norte, followed by semi-structured interviews with 10 psychologists who work in this social-assistance service. The data were systematized and analyzed using the historical-dialectical materialist method as inspiration. These data were related and problematized from a research carried out in 2007-2008 by the Marxism & Education Research Group (GPM&E), which also investigated the activities of psychologists in the CRAS of the metropolitan area of Natal. In general, the results presented the same professional profile, most of them coming from private higher education institutions, most of them with complementary training in the area of Health and Clinics, and with their previous experiences with Social Assistance work having occurred mostly in the Clinical area, along with experiences in CRAS units. Regarding the insertion in CRAS, the majority of the professionals are newly hired and inserted in these spaces due to job opportunities. The main activities carried out are aimed at social assistance activities, such as: groups, referrals, home visits, articulation with the network, assistance services, Official Government Registration (Cadastro Unico) and CRAS itself, psychosocial or individualized care and family support. It was identified that there are exclusive demands for Psychology patients in CRAS, which find the service in search of psychological support, due to the lack of services in the network that meets this specific demand. The singularities of Psychology in Social Assistance Policy are related to the following: not doing psychotherapy; carrying out collective / community work; developing psychosocial work; the lack of definition of roles with other technicians; the realization of work with families and jobs that differ from the individualized and elitist formation of Psychology. Through the results, it was possible to see the need of contributing with analyzes and problematizations that present the challenges and possibilities for the advancement of the profession in the debates, as well as theoretical and methodological propositions that are able to consolidate and strengthen the performance of the psychologists in this social field.
