RESUMO:

Despite the considerable scientific advances in the healing reach and quality of pediatric oncology
life, the children experience the cancer, your treatment and hospitalization with much pain and
suffering. In this way, the need for them to seek resources to face such problems is perceived. This study aimed to understand if and how spirituality and / or religiosity, as a coping resource for
children undergoing oncological treatment, can contribute to the realization of a humanized and
integral care. For that, we conducted a qualitative research with the participation of nine children
with cancer, of school age (6-12 years), of both sexes, hospitalized in the onco-hematology sector of
a children's hospital, a reference in oncology in the city of Natal / RN. The study was anchored in the
Gadamerian Hermeneutics and for the access of children's narratives: we used the narrative interview
mediated by playful and projective resources: the "character-doll" - as a mediator of dialogue - and
the drawing. In the dialogue with the narratives, three chapters have emerged. The first, (1) "On
account of a tumor": the trajectory of illness, treatment and their meanings for children, in which the
meaning of the experience of illness and hospitalization is treated as a long process, marked by
feelings of fear, sorrows, invasive procedures and deprivations that the sickness and treatment entail.
The Second, (2) Knowing the allies of our children. It deals with the resources recognized by them as
facilitators in dealing with the vulnerabilities present in hospitalization and treatment, such as
playing, the hospital class, caregivers, good feelings, family caregivers among others. The third, (3)
When "God helps": religiosity and spirituality in children with cancer and Humanized Care. In this,
through the children's narratives, the dimension of religiosity - prayers and belief in God - emerged as
a source of coping resources and contributed to the construction of positive meanings for the
experiences in the universe of cancer treatment and hospitalization. Finally, We hope that the present
study may be useful to bring light to the subject, enabling a greater understanding of what an
oncological request and the issues in that context, emphasizing spirituality and religiosity from a new
perspective: the child. Bringing possible clues to the production of a humanized and integral care.
