RESUMO:

The presented study has the deliberation on prolonging the laboring life against the possibility of retirement as
the field of study. We investigated, among professors, the dynamics of the system of activities (professional,
familiar, personal and social domain) aroused by the transition work-retirement, aiming to analyze the meaning
given to work and to improve the approach used in guiding the retirement planning. We start from the assumption
that the meaning of work is not restricted to the professional sphere and can be found in other areas of life. In this
direction, we use the model of analysis of the System of Activities that is situated in the theoretical reference of
the Social Psychology of the Work. The data was collected among 14 professors who declared intention to
continue working in a prior study, selected through a sampling of typical cases. A longitudinal study was
constructed and the action-research methodology was adopted. All the data was generated from the participants
direct experiences, being constructed by a data triangulation of the following methods: protocol ISA (Inventory of
the System of Activities), translated and adapted for this population; the auto-observation of the daily activities;
semi structured individual interviews. The thematic analysis was chosen to identify, to analyze and to describe
the existing subjects in the data, considering categories a priori from the model of the system of activities. We
intend thus, a more in-depth understanding of the teaching activity, as well as advancing in the theoretical
formulation of the field with the study of the transition work-retirement experimenting the ISA as an intervention instrument facilitator of this process.
