Global climate change, sustainable lifestyles and the view of adolescents: resignification of the planet and the future

In recent years, much has been discussed about global climate change (GCC); the scientific evidences point out to the influence of human actions for its drastic intensification. Therefore, studies of the psychological aspects involved become relevant. This study aimed at the investigation of the views of adolescents concerning GCCs, and the possible relations between those views and sustainable lifestyle indicators (SLI), such as: connectivity with nature (CN), future orientation, and the adoption of environmental care (EC) practices. To do so, the study used a multi-method approach, and was divided into three stages. In the first one, a questionnaire was applied to 484 students, from the 9th year of elementary school, and 1st and 2nd high school series, in private and public schools, in the cities of Natal, Arez and São Miguel do Gostoso, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The second stage included interviews with professionals who had been working with these students at their schools. At third stage, focus groups were performed with some students of some series that had already participated in the first stage, in order to better understand the views about GCC. The results of stage 01 revealed a greater knowledge about the causes and consequences of the problem, and a local translation of GCC, because 70% of the adolescents mentioned perceiving local consequences, mainly associated to the increase in temperature. A bias of spatial optimism was also noted: adolescents assessed that GCC are more worried about the world than to their cities. About SLI, it was identified that 73% of the adolescents mentioned to practice EC actions, which was significantly associated with the perception of consequences of GCC (general and local ones), and CN. The results of stages 02 and 03 are being analyzed, and it is expected that these data will serve as an incentive for environmental education projects, taking into account the ecological contexts in which adolescents live their lives
