SUMMARY:

The significant increase in the female prison population in Brazil poses complex challenges for the national prison system, highlighting the urgency of understanding its relationships with prison policies and social inequalities. This phenomenon goes beyond numbers, involving specific gender issues such as limited access to education and precarious socio-economic conditions, perpetuating the vulnerability of incarcerated women. Gender-sensitive educational policies are essential to ensure equal opportunities. In the context of Rio Grande do Norte, demographic analysis reveals the predominance of women with incomplete primary education, pointing to the need for comprehensive educational programs aimed at their reintegration. Therefore, the main objective of this dissertation is to investigate the barriers that prevent women in custody from participating in educational activities. To this end, a qualitative methodological approach will be adopted, aiming to understand the dynamics of processes and social structures related to women's access to educational activities while in custody. The research will adopt a qualitative approach with case studies in women's prisons in Rio Grande do Norte, along with extensive literature review on female incarceration and primary data collection through interviews and questionnaires, with analysis using content analysis methodology.
