SUSTAINABLE TERRITORIAL DEVELOPMENT: AN ANALYSIS BASED ON WINE GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS

Wine production has as qualitative characteristic to identify its origin the terroir that is associated with specific natural conditions: land and climate of a region and human knowledge. Geographical Indications are the main instrument used to recognize the characteristics of quality and specificity of a product in relation to the territory where it is produced. The state of Rio Grande do Sul concentrates the largest number of wine geographical indications in Brazil. This research project has as object of study the geographical indications of wine in Rio Grande do Sul. The research question is which externalities were created from the recognition of wine geographies in the development of the territory where they are located? The objectives are: to analyze the externalities in the development of the territory from the recognition of the viticultural geographical indications of the state of Rio Grande do Sul; evaluate how Association managers identify the development generated in the territory based on geographical indications; identify the main results recognized by the wineries using the geographical indication certificate; to investigate the dynamics of the production of wines with geographical indication certification in Rio Grande do Sul and to discuss resources that may characterize the pannier of territorial goods and services associated with wine territories. The methodology will be qualitative and quantitative; the empirical research will be carried out with the Associations of the geographic indications and with the wine companies belong to an Association. Semi-structured interviews applied to representatives of the Associations and questionnaires will be applied to the wineries be used as a research instrument will be used as a research instrument. The theoretical contribution of this research deals with sustainable territorial development, territorial quality income and a pannier of territorialized goods and services. It presents the creation context and uses of geographical indications and their interconnections with wine. It also presents itself as a scenario for the evolution of viticulture in Brazil and, especially, in Rio Grande do Sul.
