SUMMARY:

Understanding the relationship between productive changes and their effects in a specific territory constituted a basic effort in urban and regional studies. In this context, this thesis intends to investigate the urban and regional position of Mossoró/RN, using an approach based on the social and territorial division of labor (DSTT). Considering that the city of Mossoró recently began to reflect a cohesion capacity of companies related to the hegemonic capital that carry out the transformation of regional natural resources into merchandise, we think that the productive reality and the systematic changes in the regional and urban space of Mossoró seem, in the last 20 years of the 21st century, be related to the effects of productive restructuring (RP). Thus, the Thesis proposal raises the following question: what influences, the RP of Sertão do Nordeste and the changes caused in the DSTT, have brought to the maintenance of Mossoró's status as a Regional Capital and to the configuration of its urban space, in the last two decades of the 21st century? Two hypotheses are raised. The first is that Mossoró's current regional position is a condition associated with the effects of PR and the second considers that the city's urban dynamics are related to its ability to regionally integrate production and consumption infrastructure. These hypotheses are intertwined with the regional and urban issue. Due to this, a grouping of municipalities was delimited, around Mossoró, called pluridynamic territory of intensive use of natural resources (TPURN). The purpose of the proposal is to verify the effects of PR on the productive dynamics of TPURN, seeking to identify whether they contributed to the consolidation of Mossoró's status as a Regional Capital and in what ways they affected its urban space. For this, we will use a methodology that intends to link approaches developed by Carlos Brandão, on the production processes of capitalist space, and by Bob Jessop, Niel Brenner and Martin Jones who understand socio-spatial configurations as products of socio-spatial relationships. So far, the research has advanced using bibliographic surveys on the consequences of PR in the Sertão. Subsequent analyzes will be carried out based on primary and secondary data from official bodies.
