RESUMO:

In large cities, the sense of insecurity is consolidated as a conditioning factor of urban space and life. In this context, the way in which “hostil” architecture has produced a series of large social, cultural, and spatial effects emerges, but these are not always perceived. However, the present study aims at analyzing the extent to which this “hostil” architecture has contributed to the perceived sense of insecurity in the city of Recife.

The research develops from the hypothesis that the “hostil” architecture, creating arid environments and showing inequalities, interferes in the perception of the urban space, passing later to determine behaviors and appropriations, which can lead, at some point to an inhibition of the use of the urban spaces, leading eventually to believe that the sense of insecurity may be associated with the reading of the architectural space, and not only the incidence of violence.

In the theoretical part, one tries to understand the dialectic between man and architecture, one can affirm that architecture alone does not determine the quality of urban life, but this constitutes an important variable for the urbanity of cities. Finally, the dissertation will seek an empirical approach on architectural characteristics and perceptions in the urban environment, using a case study that will have as its object Espinheiro, a neighborhood located in the city of Recife- PE.
