RESUMO:

Space is created and modified by social, political and economic relations. In it there take place the exchanges, the meetings, the festivities, the daily life, that dynamize the city. Most of the old cities of the Northeast had their urbanizations with a Jesuit influence, not only their design, but customs, religious rituals that appropriated the space and continue to the present day. The city of Currais Novos / RN presents this same socio-spatial characteristic. However, this same space, where the religious festival takes place, has been absorbing new cultural manifestations with "profane" characteristics, extending the rite beyond the religious audience. From this, the present research seeks to investigate and reflect how the traditional public spaces of Currais Novos / RN contribute to the contemporary idea of a creative city, since these spaces are being appropriated in different and simultaneous forms during the festivities of the patron saint of Santana. For the understanding of contemporary spatiality, it will be fundamental to analyze the proposal of the idea of creative city in the scope of the scientific literature on postmodern city. Understanding how public spaces are perceived and which spatial practices are presented during religious festivity, through qualitative and ethnographic analysis, direct and indirect observation, description of manifestations, interviews and the obtaining of mental maps developed by groups of different ages, rent and location of dwelling, with the purpose of understanding the spatial symbols. Check the level of belonging of the cultural "consumers" of the city, by conducting interviews. To evaluate and understand, within the context of urban dynamics, the cultural importance of public spaces through interviews and comparison of the proposals of the different local actors. Therefore, to conclude what is the discourse shared and practiced in Currais Novos / RN regarding the public space that contributes to the creative city.
