Revealing the urban space: on cultural emergence of fortified enclaves
segregation, gated community: segregation, closed condominiums, urban development, right to the city
Gated Community represent a residential typology in expansion in the entire world. The more categorical reasons, which justify this increase, are related to apparently worsen of quality of life in the cities, security and proliferation of the real-state sector. The uninterrupted look for those conditions pass through the need of getting those benefits in order to avoid the city inconvenient, which bring us to consider that there is also a representation of social inequality. In Brazil, the search for security is the main subject to justify the look for these places, which in turn, represents, in a diffuse way, the feeling of a better quality of life. Considering the historical weight in social practice formation, we can observe that behind those arguments there are several additional “buts” which can help qualify the phenomena. This thesis has the objective to understand the problems and questions, which involve the development of the culture of living in closed condominiums and the city itself. In order to do that, it was necessary to do a theoretical gathering, which was used as comparative topic with the reality researched and relate with the theoretical perspective about urban sociability considering the totality of the dimensions. Therefore, we investigate the behavior elements which structure the living experience within a condominium such as antisocial behavior elements, transgressions and their justification. Those elements were extracted through discussions and through observation of the behavior of the residents of Jardim Atlântico condominium, located at Parnamirim/RN, place which has had a house market expansion regarding condominiums. The composition of this research in order to obtain those informations were based on participant observation technique, interviewing and knowledge of the rules of the condominium and its influence on social behavior. The preliminary results bring us to verify that however the ideal typology is based on community development, it is not what it is seen in reality, once there are more and more political subject disconnection, because of individualization and weakening of the collective structure of the city, in which the insertion of most part of the individuals is achieved for use/exchange value convenience and not by a greater totality of the city.
