SUMMARY:

Marine fauna faces threats from various anthropogenic impacts. We aimed to investigate the communication to coastal communities in Areia Branca/RN by educational institutions, utilizing scientific exhibitions on this issue. Through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, members of the Cetáceos da Costa Branca Project at Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (PCCB-UERN) outlined their backgrounds, professional experiences, educational activities, and their geographical and demographic reach. Data analysis employed the Technique of Construction and Analysis of Meaning Units. We reported on the experiences of the Parceiros do Mar Project, conducting a bibliographical and documentary review, and analyzed the incorporation of Sustainability Science aspects. We also gathered data from public basic education teachers. They had access to the scientific exhibition of the Sea Partners Project, comprising three sessions: fauna characterization, photographic exhibition, and pop-up book. A questionnaire, addressing seven Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), was applied, examining participant identification and perception of SDGs related to the exhibition. The analysis included descriptive statistics for closed-ended data and the Technique of Construction and Analysis of Meaning Units for open-ended data. Results showed that 17 PCCB-UERN members, engaged from 2018 to 2021, are biologists and veterinarians with diverse roles. Varied professional experiences, such as beach cleanups and exhibitions, indicate ongoing training opportunities. Activities span different educational levels, employing pedagogical approaches, strategies, and diverse resources to address marine conservation. The analysis reveals execution challenges, including audience attraction and interactivity, highlighting opportunities to explore alternative approaches. Parceiros do Mar Project actions promote public participation, contextualization of issues, and interdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing SDGs. Twenty-nine municipal teachers, who responded to the questionnaire, had diverse perceptions across the three exhibition sessions, indicating a need for improvement in specific areas, like Gender Equality. The exhibition enriched knowledge, stimulated socio-environmental reflections, and encouraged educational practices, underscoring the importance of tangible teaching resources. Teachers acknowledged the exhibition's contribution to a holistic understanding of sustainability, suggesting areas for improvement, such as access to supplementary informational materials. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the significance of the Cetáceos da Costa Branca Project (PCCB-UERN) in raising awareness about anthropogenic impacts on marine fauna. The research underscores the transformative role of the Parceiros do Mar Project's scientific exhibitions in Sustainability Education, emphasizing the innovative and integrative approach recognized by teachers for its relevance in fostering a society conscious of marine conservation.
