SUMMARY:

Amid exponential population growth, water management has been largely affected. Thus, the quantity and quality of inland waters present in nature has undergone significant changes due to human pressure around these springs. From this, the need to sensitize different subjects is justified, mediated here by discussions with an emphasis on water sources (with regard to water consumption) and on the connection with education for sustainability (as an integrative practice capable of transforming the environmental knowledge). In this sense, the general objective of the thesis was to verify the quality of water in water bodies in the tropical semi-arid region of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, correlating it with the emerging needs of the problematic society-environment, favoring the construction of knowledge about water through education. for sustainability, while seeking to understand the teachers about the objective of sustainable development 6 (drinking water and sanitation) and its articulation with sustainability, aiming at a critical reflection on environmental citizenship in science teaching practices. In the methodological course, qualitative-quantitative approaches, conceptual and reflective analysis were adopted, in addition to an exploratory and descriptive study. The first chapter had as main objective to evaluate the density of cyanobacteria and the indices that infer quality to the water in the Piancó-Piranhas-Açu Hydrographic Basin, as well as to identify the factors of greater influence on the occurrence of the flowering of these aquatic organisms. The density of potentially toxic cyanobacteria (DC) was high, surpassing CONAMA Resolution 357/2005, which recommends a maximum value of 50,000 cells/mL, as well as Ministry of Health Ordinance 2914/2011, which indicates 20,000 cells/mL as a threshold value. Despite the Water Quality Index indicating that the waters of the dams are suitable for multiple uses, the Trophic State Index presented limitations, considering the excessive primary productivities associated with the presence of cyanobacteria and, therefore, potentially the occurrence of cyanotoxins, arising from loads polluting. Regarding the correlation between CD and seasonality, in general terms, we obtained a significant influence (p < 0.05), with the greater proliferation of these organisms being directly related to dry periods. Chapter 2 aimed to present discussions about the role of Education for Sustainability (ES) as an instrument in the development and construction of society's knowledge, through democratic management in the use and management of water. Education for Sustainability is an important tool that goes beyond the traditional educational models used, helping in the process of training the subject and in terms of understanding human needs in the face of the problem of sustainable use of water resources. In this way, moral and ethical values articulated to educational actions in the perspective of Sustainability, on an ongoing basis, for various groups in society, are essential to guarantee the sustainable maintenance of the environment. The third chapter is under construction.
