SUMMARY:

Reverse osmosis desalination has been used as an alternative to provide good quality drinking water to diffuse populations in the Brazilian semiarid region. However, this technology also generates a large amount of waste, which can be reused in local productive activities, depending on its quality. Thus, the present work aimed to evaluate the perception of the population about the technology implemented, as well as the quality of the groundwater and of the brackish waste for irrigation and animal watering purposes. Part of the database used in this study was made available by the “Programa Água Doce (PAD)”, and the information refers to 33 municipalities in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. The evaluation of the water quality was carried out by physical-chemical and microbiological analyses, while the perception of the population, through semi-structured interviews. According to normative instructions and reference bibliographies, parameters of greater relevance were selected for the determination of water quality indexes. In the communities evaluated, 53% of the families were users of desalination systems. Sources of drinking water, desalinated water and water from cisterns were classified as excellent or good (94.5%) by the population. However, 46% of the interviewees reported changes in the organoleptic properties of the sources, mainly related to the taste caused by chlorine and/or salts. Fixed monthly expenses such as electricity tariffs (62%), operators' remuneration (90%) and reserve fund (100%) were mostly paid by the community itself. Only 18% of users considered the drinking water supply system adequate before the desalinators were installed. Only 28% of the wells presented water quality parameters within the acceptable values for both uses evaluated. Most of the use restrictions were related to irrigation activity (70%), when compared to animal watering (48%). Among the evaluated parameters, conductivity, sulfate and magnesium were more related to changes in water quality for animal watering. Chloride, sodium and conductivity were the parameters that most distanced themselves from the recommended limits for irrigation. A high percentage of the well water (51%), and of the brackish waste (65%), were classified with bad quality for plant cultivation. Conversely, most of the groundwater (87%), and the brackish waste (71%), integrated the best quality classes (excellent and good) for animal production.
