RESUMO:

Education for Sustainable Development may be a possible way to make education more relevant to social development and to addressing the environmental and economic challenges that the world experiences today and may develop in the future. This study intends to evaluate the contribution of the insertion of the theme of Education for Sustainability in schools located around areas subject to socio-environmental vulnerability, in order to discuss and promote local socio-environmental problems. The research was developed in a qualitative and quantitative approach. The use of a questionnaire, containing open and closed questions related to the topic, was adopted as methodological procedures. The open questions were analyzed through the technique of Analysis and Analysis of Units of Significance, which is based on content analysis. For the analysis of the didactic materials, a questionnaire, a spreadsheet model, was used, adapted from the model proposed by Plein (2015), in order to evaluate how the subject was being addressed and the importance of the material to reduce the social and environmental vulnerability of the communities. In order to identify the methodologies and the main difficulties encountered to address the issue in the classroom, the use of Participatory Action Research was used in a qualitative approach, as proposed by Franco (2005). It has been verified that Education for Sustainable Development in the school space, gains signs of recognition in its role of coping with the socio-environmental problem, as it reinforces sustainability worldwide from Education. However, the approach to this issue in the classroom will only make sense if it is accompanied by restructuring in terms of public policies, capable of providing conditions so that the teacher can ally the proposals present in the educational reference documents to their reality, providing improvement for the Quality of life of students and their school community.
