SUMMARY:

This research aims to diagnose how journalistic coverage of episodes of police violence against black individuals in Brazil has been conducted, based on a case study of the news programs Jornal Nacional and Repórter Brasil. Through the proposed analysis, we seek to outline answers to the following questions: Do the news reports on police violence specify the race of the victims? Is there a commitment in journalistic practice to promote a debate on public security related to racial issues? As a methodological approach, we have chosen Televisual Analysis (Becker, 2012) and Frame Theory (Tuchman, 1978) adapted to journalism. Through the results of this study, we aim to establish an understanding regarding the potential impacts of the absence of racial discourse in television news for the perpetuation of a logic that criminalizes the black population and normalizes their deaths.
