SUMMARY:

This study analyzes the images and discourses present in the magazines Carta Capital, Veja, and Época regarding Pope Francis during the World Youth Day held in Rio de Janeiro in 2013. This year marked the resignation of Benedict XVI and the election of Francis as Pope. The Brazilian edition of the event was led by the new administration and received extensive media coverage. From a discursive perspective, we examine how the mentioned magazines constructed the institutional image of the Church, personalized in Pope Francis, through media discourse. During our analysis, we identified media discourse playing a fundamental role in creating a renewing ecclesial narrative, in which Pope Francis is portrayed as a charismatic, humble, courageous figure, focused on the less fortunate, an advocate for reforms, and an adherent to a revolutionary approach.
