SUMMARY:

This research aims to define and investigate the “Cinema of place and of the possible” concept based on the cinematographic experience in the Porto do Capim community in João Pessoa, Paraíba. It starts analyzing the existence processes and their materialization in nine cinematographic works produced and experienced in the riverside territory between 2016 and 2023. To reach this objective, we also propose investigating how the women from the territory narrate their experiences and which strategies they use to express the geographic place and the place-body. The study intends to understand the insertion of these subjects in the conception and production of films process to analyze how these counter-narratives are built from the individual and the collective. To carry out this study proposal, we start with a bibliographical survey that works as pieces of a puzzle that is, at the same time, fruitful and incomplete. This conceptual gap - Cinema of place - is, to a certain extent, supplied by the analysis of movies based on social markers demanded by the object/phenomenon studied here: social class, gender, and ethnicity. Such markers cross all analyzed films, and they evoke the following categories of analysis: body, territory, and narrative disputes. The bibliographic review that underpins this study and its unfolded concepts articulates with authors such as Milton Santos (2000, 2002), Luís Mauro Sá Martino (2019), Enrique Dussel (2016), Helena Tavares Gonçalves (2021), Walter Mignolo (2003), Gayatri Spivak (2010) and Patricia Hill Collins (2019). Based on the concept of “epistemicide” from Sueli Carneiro (2005), this paper proposes to think that the narrative strategies in Porto do Capim, through cinema, are a decolonial turn that allows us to visualize the territory as a cinema-territory.
