SUMMARY:

This research aims to propose a recategorization of the television style (Butler, 2010) observed in police journalism, deepening the studies on television and televisuality, with a focus on police journalism. We seek to analyze the existence of a television style in this type of program, which is generally characterized by the constant use of controversies, sensationalism, and spectacle (Debord, 1995). Additionally, we intend to study the posture and performance of the presenters, investigating how they construct their personas and shape the program's conduct according to their personal style. Our research object consists of three local police newscasts broadcasted in the state of Pernambuco: "Por aqui," aired by TV Jornal, an affiliate of SBT; "Bora Pernambuco," broadcasted by TV Tribuna, an affiliate of Band; and "Balanço Geral PE," presented by TV Clube, an affiliate of Record. Therefore, our research will be conducted on police newscasts produced and broadcasted in Pernambuco, which mainly influence the local context. Our research aims to answer the following question: how does sensationalism, controversy, and sensationalism permeate the environment of police journalism, giving rise to a specific television style? Considering that television positions itself as a tool to connect people, keeping them informed, entertained, and occupied, even before social media with their scrolling features, television sought to involve the viewer in its production network, diversifying to meet various media consumption desires. For a long time, a conception of television genres and formats was built and consolidated (Souza, 2004); (Fechine, 2001). However, proposals, suggestions, and even impositions were made to the audience, which at some point observed the capitalist logic being inverted, no longer being merely an active consumer with rights and opinions about products but becoming a passive viewer, observing the events of the consumer relationship without the capacity to express opinions (Canclini, 1995). In the field of communication, we recognize that as technologies advance and new communicative tools emerge, society debates the end of technologies used in contemporaneity. However, even with these changes, television continues to play a significant role, offering the audience experiences and possibilities for media interaction.
