SUMMARY:

What can be found if the visuality of black people in horror films is used as an index to read images of blackness outside of colonialism, capitalism and patriarchy? How to establish the breakdown of temporal linearity that will allow the disarrangement of the narrative arc of coloniality? How to see and make images of bodies established by the regime of coloniality? All of this we take as a door, an exit to make other things visible. The objective of the research was to think about blackness, conceptualized by Denise Ferreira da Silva, through the images and narratives of contemporary horror (and science fiction) cinema. The research question was: what can the narratives and images of terror reveal when read, felt and experienced through the perspective of raciality? 4 horror films were selected according to criteria established in research, the films were watched and according to the narratives of the films, languages, concepts and images were explored for the composition of an essay that addresses a multitude of issues, supported by theories and studies of communication , philosophy, psychology, quantum physics, conspiracy theories and pop culture. Four Brazilian films were used as main narratives: Good Manners (2018), The Trail (2017), The Devil's Knot (2018) and The Cannibal Club (2018). The main films were followed by secondary films, which were Panic Room (USA, 2002), Population 436 (USA, 2006), Under The Shadow (IR, 2016), Work Tires (BR, 2011), Alien Nation (USA, 1988), Nope (US, 2022), Fresh (US, 2022). As a reference for artistic research methodology, the research was guided by the proposals of Roldán and Viadel (2012). Important theoretical references for the construction of the essay are the thoughts of philosophers Denise Ferreira da Silva(2022), Audre Lord (2019), Patricial Hill Collins (2019) and Angela Davis; The research was also strongly inspired by the theories of African-American researcher and filmmaker Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman (2019), about black horror cinema in the United States; the concept of psychological warfare commonly used in militarism/politics was also important; Finally, the theorizations of researcher Clovis Moura were fundamental for the elaboration of the dissertation.
