SUMMARY:

The coronavirus disease had its first registers in the world in Wuhan, China, in 2019 and on March 11 2020, World Health Organisation (WHO), declared Covid-19 as a pandemic. On March 20, the Health Ministry published a document confirming the communitarian transmission of the new coronavirus all over the country and in a short period of time, Brazil became de epicentre of the pandemic in the American continent, concentrating approximately half of the total cases in the Latin American and Caribbean areas. Studies regarding communication of the sanitary crisis caused by COVID-19 in Brazil, show that the speech about the pandemic had converted into a dispute of power, having the media as one of the spaces for battles, and that the massive production of information about the subject, in the midst of a context of polarisation, had led to a phenomenon of “infodemic”. In this sense, the pandemic imposed a new reality to the social movements and to the citizens’ participation by prohibiting and restricting protests and street manifestations as a part of the strategy of preventing the disease. That way, our study has as a goal understanding what are the strategies used by a social movement of young people to communicate with its young audience, issue information regarding the subject and mobilising this collective around emerging causes, giving the context of the disaster. Our assumption is that the usage of internet, more specifically, social media, has gained an even more relevant dimension as a means of communication for these mobilisation networks to keep active. We also believe that the main linked content refers to: 1) knowledge diffusion 2) public policy demands for the youth and vulnerable populations 3) creation of solidarity networks 4) social protest. To prove our point, we’ll make a content analysis from the social movement page “Levante popular da Juventude” on twitter, during the first six months of the pandemic.
