SUMMARY:

This study analyses how Brazilian national newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Globo disseminated the concept of sustainable development in Brazil between 1992 and 2012. Publications on sustainability are analysed using Critical Discourse Analysis as a methodological approach. It is believed that the period chosen to this research was favourable to the propagation of the concept of sustainability in Brazil due to the occurrence of two international conferences in the city of Rio de Janeiro: the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in 1992, and the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) in 2012. It is concluded, however, that the concept of sustainable development was distorted by Brazilian media coverage, causing misinformation in the country.
